Town hall meeting this evening tackles future of Michigan schools

Per pupil funding, collective bargaining, teacher certification, charter schools and schools of choice — they're all on the table in a town hall meeting this evening on The Future of Michigan Schools.

From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at CMNtv studios in Troy, moderator Charlie Langton and a panel of five will debate the merits of Gov. Rick Snyder's education reform proposals and take questions from the audience, by phone and via Twitter.

Joining Langton on the panel are Oakland Intermediate Schools Superintendent Vickie L. Markavitch, Farmington Schools Superintendent Susan Zurvalec, and Dan Quisenberry of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies.
Weighing in from the Legislature are state Reps. Tom McMillin, R-Rochester Hills, and Ellen Cogen Lipton, D-Huntington Woods.
The Legislature is completing negotiations on measures that overhaul the state's tax structures and reduce per pupil spending for public schools.
The governor has proposed changes to the public education system that would allow for universal schools of choice, in which schools can no longer refuse out-of-district students, and lifting the cap on the number of charter schools in a district with at least one failing school. He has also proposed higher standards for teacher certification.
The doors open at 5 p.m. for people wishing to join the studio audience. Seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis. There are no reservations.
People can send in their comments and questions online to www.theoaklandpress.com, and call in live to 248-589-7778.
The town hall can also be viewed live online at www.theoaklandpress.com and www.cmntv.org/watch, and on cable Channel 18 in cities served by CMNtv.
