Medical marijuana: A cash crop for Michigan

Medical marijuana is proving to be one of those programs that actually benefits Michigan government's bottom line.

A  required report to the Michigan legislature says the program took in nearly $3 for every dollar it cost to administer.
Voters approved medical marijuana in 2008, but it remains controversial, largely because marijuana remains a banned schedule 1 drug under federal law, putting state statues and federal law at odds.
In state budget terms, however, the amount of money medical marijuana brings into the state isn't all that much. The state took in just shy of $10 million in the last fiscal year while it cost $3.6 million to administer the program.
